Ever since 1881, when Kintaro Hattori built Japan's first watch, SEIKO has been dedicated to timekeeping perfection. In the 1950's and 1960's, SEIKO challenged themselves with creating the world's first quartz watch. With their signature passion for technological creation, SEIKO did just that in 1969 in the Quartz Astron which brought innovation to the history of watches and completely revolutionized the concept of watches in general. Given these amazing feats in watch-making, it's no wonder why we at Osborne Jewelers are proud to carry this famous, high quality watch line.

Starting in 1968, Seiko has been accumulating international awards for their watch making. Most recently, the Spring Drive Chronograph won the 2008 Watch of the Year from Horloges Magazine (the Netherlands), the Spring drive SNR011 won the 2008 Golden Wheel Award from Uhren-Magazin (Germany), and the Spring Drive SNR005 won the Design award for Watch Time magazine (USA) in 2006. They have also received other honors, such as being the official time keeper of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway and the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

They have introduced many horological world firsts such as:

• 1969: World's first automatic chronograph watch equipped with both vertical clutch and column wheel & world's first quartz watch "SEIKO Quartz Astron"
• 1973: World's first six-digit LCD watch
• 1975: World's First multi-function digital watch & the world's first titanium diver's watch.
• 1983: World's first TV watch & the world's first watch with sound recorder
• 1988: World's first "A.G.S." (automatic generating system) watch and was later renamed "kinetic"
• 1990: World's first computerized diver's watch

One of the most astonishing and impressive thing that came of the creation of the world's first quartz watch was SEIKO's attitude towards patent rights. Since the company's first and foremost passion was to change the future of watches, SEIKO didn't pursue monopolization on patent rights of the unique technologies they created. Instead, they opened them to the world. This means that in the years that followed, many technologies provided by SEIKO became world standards and have contributed to development of present day quartz watches.
